Comebacks

Comebacks
Have you ever thought of the perfect comeback…about five minutes after you needed it? You’ve pretty much lost your opportunity by then; the moment has passed, and it’s best not to embarrass yourself.

Jesus had some pretty good comebacks—the best, in fact. Every time the devil came at Him, He had a ready answer: “It is written.”

How did Jesus have these powerful responses ready for each of the temptations the devil threw at Him? Preparation. It's been said, if you stay ready, you don't have to get ready. He was ready when the devil took his best swing, partly because like every other good little Jewish boy, Jesus would’ve had to memorize large portions of Scripture as He grew up.

What would happen if you got a bunch of the living, powerful Word of God deep inside you? Do you think you might have some specific comebacks every bit as effective as those Jesus used? You betcha! The same Holy Spirit that raised Jesus from a borrowed grave lives in you, and the very same Word of God is available to each of us.

But you’ve got to get them ready in advance. You can’t wait until the moment arrives—because by the time you need them, you won’t have time to prepare. If you don’t have a plan for what to do when you get hit, when he punches you in the mouth, you’re going to go down my friend.

When you put the Word of God inside of you, you’re loading up for a day of temptation in the wilderness. You’re preparing for those moments when you get punched in the mouth. If you wait until you have a busted lip, it’s too late. Remember, failing to plan is planning to fail; however, if you put the prep work in now, when the trial comes, you’ll be ready to STAND.

If you want to supercharge your time of fasting, spend a great deal of time reading what God has said to His people. Put it deep within you; soak in it. Then, pray it back to Him. Praying God’s own Word back to Him is the single greatest way to know that you’re praying according to the heart of God—after all, He wrote it!

And always remember the best comeback of all time, “It is written!”

“Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward ahungered. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, and saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and showeth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; and saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.”
