Watch Your Surroundings

Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8).

Lions attack sick young or straggling animals; they choose victims who are alone or not alert.  Satan is the lion looking for someone to devour. Peter warns us to watch out for Satan when we are suffering, weak or vulnerable. When we are feeling alone, weak or helpless and so focused on our troubles that we forget to watch for danger, we are especially vulnerable to Satan's attacks.

I have always told my children to pay attention to their surroundings when they are getting in or out of their vehicle.  I especially want them to be attentive if they are alone, distracted or both.  When they are not paying attention to their surroundings they put themselves at risk of danger. In the same respect, as Christians we put ourselves at risk when we are not watchful and on guard for the cunning attacks of the devil. Satan lurks around looking for the opportunity to cause us to stumble or fall prey to the schemes of the world. We must be able to immediately recognize the trap that Satan sets before us and be able to stand strong and defend ourselves.

My prayer is that your weapon of defense, the Holy Spirit is so real in your life that the devil will never have the opportunity to cause you harm.
